Sylvia (2003) Review

I watched Sylvia with one question going through my head – Why does Sylvia Plath get a biopic? It was about a month ago that I watched The Iron Lady, a film about the first female Prime Minister and a time in British history when society was in turmoil and a hugely divisive person ruled the country. Though it had its faults, it was for the most part a very good film and I never, not once, wondered why anyone was making a film about Margaret Thatcher. I understood why this woman warranted an hour and half of my life. … Continue reading Sylvia (2003) Review

The Switch (2010) Review

The Switch is the perfect example of what is wrong with trying to place films in a category. The Switch was advertised as a romantic comedy. The trailer showed some pretty funny moments but overall a quite interesting concept. It was the concept and the main actor that actually peaked my interest and made me want to watch the film. The story is quite interesting. What happens when through a quite implausible turn of events, a man donates his sperm to his female best friend without her (or him) realising. The story introduces us to the two main characters and the usual, “comedy” peripheral friends, … Continue reading The Switch (2010) Review

The Woman in Black (2012) Review

How scared you actually want to be by this film should determine whether you go to see it at the cinema or not. You will be scared. That goes without saying. Huge sections of this film are set in a creepy Victorian house, with little or no lighting and you are set up to jump and scream at every opportune moment. What I am talking about is whether you want to be unnerved or terrified! At the cinema the best you can hope for is unnerved. There will be a tense silence over everyone in the large room as Daniel Radcliffe … Continue reading The Woman in Black (2012) Review

Street Kings (2008) Review

I’m in two minds about Keanu Reeves. He has a somewhat deserved reputation as being someone who can’t act. He can come across in roles as wooden, repeating his lines with little or no emotion, regardless of what is going on in the scene. On the flipside of this, he has starred in some of the coolest films of all time. You can’t argue with what he does in The Matrix and before that he was even holding his own as a fully fledged action hero in the incredible Speed. Granted, neither of these films require him to pull out the … Continue reading Street Kings (2008) Review

Ten films you should be excited about in 2012!

When I actually wrote down all the films I think will be “must see” for this year, I actually got a list of twenty-one!!! I decided the best thing to try to do would be to narrow it down to a good ten. The ten I’m most excited about seeing because of the hype around them, the trailers, the actual story within the film itself or the fact that the earlier films in the series have been good. So without further ado, we begin at number ten… 10 – The Pirates! In an adventure with Scientists. It was the trailer … Continue reading Ten films you should be excited about in 2012!

Tropic Thunder (2008) Review

Tropic Thunder feels like it wouldn’t have mattered if nobody had seen it. I watched it thinking that this film was made more for every actor involved to have fun and mess around than it was to actually make any money. It’s because of this that I loved it! From the ingenious fake trailers used to introduce each character at the beginning to the countless, ridiculous cameo’s, this film was brilliant. It felt like each actor was trying to outdo the others and be as outrageous as they could be. When those actors include Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey … Continue reading Tropic Thunder (2008) Review

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) Review

If you look at any top [insert number here] Sci-Fi films list, you’ll find The Day the Earth Stood Still. With that in mind I decided I should probably see it. Now I’m always really wary of older films. The last couple of times I saw a film of any age resembling The Day the Earth Stood Still they were On the Waterfront and The Hustler. I didn’t really enjoy either of them. It seems that films of the past have a slower pacing than films today. I’m all for slow building tension but back then tension seemed to drag. Whole … Continue reading The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) Review

The Last Exorcism (2010) Review

This film should have been terrifying. It had all the ingredients for being the kind of film that really scares me. It is filmed like a documentary or “found footage” film, it is about a possessed girl (possessed girls or little girl ghosts are the MOST terrifying) and it is produced by Eli Roth who was behind films like Hostel. It could have been brilliant. It isn’t though. The problem is this film doesn’t know what it wants to be. It begins by introducing itself as a “found footage” documentary on a priest’s Last Exorcism. Normally these are rough cuts … Continue reading The Last Exorcism (2010) Review

The Iron Lady (2012) Review

It’s not often I will agree with David Cameron but he made a good observation of The Iron Lady – They probably should have waited. The film is advertised as a biopic of Margaret Thatcher, portraying the key moments in her political career, of which there are many. This film could have chosen from a huge amount of key events that affected the whole country and just focused on that. A film on Thatcher and the Miner’s Strike or Thatcher and the Falklands. The amount of material on these key moments in British history could have easily created a good feature … Continue reading The Iron Lady (2012) Review

Faster (2010) Review

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson improves any film by at least 50% with his presence alone. Perfect examples are Walking Tall, Welcome to the Jungle and The Other Guys. All these are perfectly ordinary films but you put Dwayne Johnson in there and they just become more enjoyable. They become more fun. He is a true screen presence and the future of action film stars. While the Expendables films are taking a good, overdue look at the awesome action stars of the past, Dwayne Johnson is starting his career as a proper action film star. The films I mention above are great, tongue-in-cheek action films … Continue reading Faster (2010) Review
