Moneyball (2011) Review

It’s a bold move to make a sports film that shows very little of the actual sport in question. When you watch a sports film, you expect a host of clichés that you accept willingly. The team will be in a disastrous situation at the beginning of the movie, a new entity will enter, a coach or player, who will struggle but will eventually win-over the team. The team will lose, then begin to win, and then have a final game which will be make or break for everyone involved. It doesn’t necessarily matter what the outcome of the match will be because ultimately, … Continue reading Moneyball (2011) Review

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004) Review

Sometimes, making films with your friends makes for great entertainment. When you can see that a cast genuinely really like each other, they have great banter and can spark off each other, especially in scenes that are clearly improvised, the end product is usually a very entertaining film. We’ve seen this a lot recently, particularly with the films produced by Judd Apatow. The same actors end up in each film and the result is usually very entertaining, though not always hilariously funny or a “classic” comedy. Dodgeball fits this description perfectly. The same actors end up playing the same sort … Continue reading Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004) Review

Good Luck Chuck (2007) Review

Some films have great ideas but unfortunately just miss a certain spark. That spark can be anything, the script, the characters, parts of the story, the dialogue, the special effects. Sometimes a film is really good, bordering on brilliant but is just let down by one element which doesn’t fit with everything else. Good Luck Chuck suffers from this problem. The spark its missing is that it didn’t really cast the right actors. I’m not saying that the actors are terrible. Dane Cook does a decent enough job, as does Dan Fogler as his best friend but I was watching the … Continue reading Good Luck Chuck (2007) Review

21 Jump Street (2012) Review

I love being surprised by a film. I stand by the fact that I will pretty much watch anything, regardless of director/actor/genre and with my girlfriend getting into films as much as I am now, that sometimes means sitting and watching something I usually wouldn’t. It is pretty hard to go into a film without any preconceived ideas. The perfect example of this will be Dark Knight Rises. I’ve written before why I think that my own ideas of how good this film should be will probably mean I don’t enjoy it as much as I should. It has worked … Continue reading 21 Jump Street (2012) Review

Why they shouldn’t make Ghostbusters 3!

About a month ago I caught the end of Ghostbusters 2. It was brilliant. I found myself reciting key lines and getting excited about seeing moments that I don’t think I’d watched since I was at leat a teenager. The Ghostbusters were a huge part of my childhood. I loved both films, the tv show, I had books, toys, bedsheets and wallpaper. I was (and still am) a huge fan. So any news about a new Ghostbusters film should be met with unbridled joy and excitement… but no. I think it is a terrible idea. Here’s why; 1. No Bill … Continue reading Why they shouldn’t make Ghostbusters 3!
