REC 2 (2009) Review

I love “found footage/shaky camera” films! Blair Witch Project still stands up as one of my favourite horror films and it was joined by Paranormal Activity recently. I also like it when this type of film tries something outside of basic horror, Cloverfield being a fantastic example. It can rack up the tension and put you straight in the action. Blair Witch, Paranormal Activity and Cloverfield all worked brilliantly because the person behind the camera was actively involved in the film, meaning the viewer is actively involved in the film! Unfortunately the whole “found footage” film has began to die a death. Paranormal Activity … Continue reading REC 2 (2009) Review

Man on Wire (2008) Review

I love a good documentary! One of the best documentaries I saw last year was Banksy’s “Exit through the Gift Shop.” I think for me to enjoy the documentary I have to be intrigued by the subject. Seems obvious but it has to have a sense of wonder or “wow” about it or I’ll begin to get bored by the whole thing. This is why Exit through the Gift shop was so good because it sucked you in with the intriguing character at the center of the whole film. Man on Wire does exactly the same! The synopsis is simple; it’s … Continue reading Man on Wire (2008) Review

The Incredible Hulk (2008) Re-View

I’m now going to be a complete hypocrite because in my Green Hornet review I said that Marvel had ruined all superhero films. This isn’t actually true. They have watered down the whole genre meaning that you almost have to do something completely different with every single superhero film to stop yourself from making something generic and average. I thought Thor and Captain America were average. They portrayed their superhero’s brilliantly but I’d already seen that kind of superhero film with Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk. That meant that when I re-watched the Incredible Hulk, I thought it would fall into the average … Continue reading The Incredible Hulk (2008) Re-View

Splice (2009) Review

The good thing about LoveFilm is I can keep it completely random. I don’t put any of my films as high priority, I just let them send me whatever film they want. That way I get to see films I’m kind of interested in rather than only seeing films I’m desperate to see all the time. It means I might find a hidden gem. This was the reason that I ended up watching Splice. Now Splice isn’t a hidden gem. It isn’t awful and is actually a very interesting concept. In a time when people are messing with genetics and … Continue reading Splice (2009) Review

The Big Lebowski (1998) Review

I would probably have enjoyed this film more if it wasn’t considered a “classic.” I’ve got a real problem with films considered classics because nine times out of ten, I don’t get it. Last year I watched Easy Rider. This is in a lot of top 50, sometimes top 10, greatest films lists but I watched it utterly bored and confused. This probably means I’m not intelligent enough to get Easy Rider and its subtle comments on “drug taking, corporate America, riding a bike no-handed and not getting a hair cut” but sometimes it feels like people call a film … Continue reading The Big Lebowski (1998) Review

The Green Hornet (2011) Review

Marvel has destroyed all superhero films! There was a time when a superhero film was an event – the first Spiderman, any Superman film, any Batman film (until Batman and Robin) but now they are a predictable addition to every summer movies list it has destroyed the very genre itself and Marvel are to blame. The reason they are to blame is because they decided on the brilliant idea of creating a string of films that will culminate with this summers Avengers film. This meant that for the Avengers film to be a reality, they had to release at least … Continue reading The Green Hornet (2011) Review

Season of the Witch (2011) Review

I’ve got a lot of time for Nicholas Cage. He has made some of my favourite films (Con Air, The Rock, Kick-Ass) and when he is at the top of his game, he can really act! He is the kind of actor that when you realise he is in a film, even if it looks like it will be poor, you have to stand up and pay attention. Season of the Witch is the perfect example of that kind of film. When I saw the trailer it didn’t exactly take my breath away. The idea seemed interesting, a girl who … Continue reading Season of the Witch (2011) Review

The Karate Kid Review (2010)

Two words got me interested in this film from the moment the trailer finished: Jackie. Chan. Not that I’m a huge Jackie Chan fan. I have seen Rush Hour 1 and 2 and a couple of his other western films but I haven’t not seen anything of his asian films. (though I am aware that the Police Story franchise is supposed to be fantastic.) The moment I watched that trailer and saw Jaden Smith getting beaten up by a gang of Chinese boys and then Jackie Chan (in the Mr Miyagi role from the original) coming to his rescue, you couldn’t take the stupid grin off my … Continue reading The Karate Kid Review (2010)
