Tropic Thunder (2008) Review

Tropic Thunder feels like it wouldn’t have mattered if nobody had seen it. I watched it thinking that this film was made more for every actor involved to have fun and mess around than it was to actually make any money. It’s because of this that I loved it! From the ingenious fake trailers used to introduce each character at the beginning to the countless, ridiculous cameo’s, this film was brilliant. It felt like each actor was trying to outdo the others and be as outrageous as they could be. When those actors include Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey … Continue reading Tropic Thunder (2008) Review

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) Review

If you look at any top [insert number here] Sci-Fi films list, you’ll find The Day the Earth Stood Still. With that in mind I decided I should probably see it. Now I’m always really wary of older films. The last couple of times I saw a film of any age resembling The Day the Earth Stood Still they were On the Waterfront and The Hustler. I didn’t really enjoy either of them. It seems that films of the past have a slower pacing than films today. I’m all for slow building tension but back then tension seemed to drag. Whole … Continue reading The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) Review

The Last Exorcism (2010) Review

This film should have been terrifying. It had all the ingredients for being the kind of film that really scares me. It is filmed like a documentary or “found footage” film, it is about a possessed girl (possessed girls or little girl ghosts are the MOST terrifying) and it is produced by Eli Roth who was behind films like Hostel. It could have been brilliant. It isn’t though. The problem is this film doesn’t know what it wants to be. It begins by introducing itself as a “found footage” documentary on a priest’s Last Exorcism. Normally these are rough cuts … Continue reading The Last Exorcism (2010) Review

The Iron Lady (2012) Review

It’s not often I will agree with David Cameron but he made a good observation of The Iron Lady – They probably should have waited. The film is advertised as a biopic of Margaret Thatcher, portraying the key moments in her political career, of which there are many. This film could have chosen from a huge amount of key events that affected the whole country and just focused on that. A film on Thatcher and the Miner’s Strike or Thatcher and the Falklands. The amount of material on these key moments in British history could have easily created a good feature … Continue reading The Iron Lady (2012) Review

Faster (2010) Review

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson improves any film by at least 50% with his presence alone. Perfect examples are Walking Tall, Welcome to the Jungle and The Other Guys. All these are perfectly ordinary films but you put Dwayne Johnson in there and they just become more enjoyable. They become more fun. He is a true screen presence and the future of action film stars. While the Expendables films are taking a good, overdue look at the awesome action stars of the past, Dwayne Johnson is starting his career as a proper action film star. The films I mention above are great, tongue-in-cheek action films … Continue reading Faster (2010) Review

REC 2 (2009) Review

I love “found footage/shaky camera” films! Blair Witch Project still stands up as one of my favourite horror films and it was joined by Paranormal Activity recently. I also like it when this type of film tries something outside of basic horror, Cloverfield being a fantastic example. It can rack up the tension and put you straight in the action. Blair Witch, Paranormal Activity and Cloverfield all worked brilliantly because the person behind the camera was actively involved in the film, meaning the viewer is actively involved in the film! Unfortunately the whole “found footage” film has began to die a death. Paranormal Activity … Continue reading REC 2 (2009) Review

Man on Wire (2008) Review

I love a good documentary! One of the best documentaries I saw last year was Banksy’s “Exit through the Gift Shop.” I think for me to enjoy the documentary I have to be intrigued by the subject. Seems obvious but it has to have a sense of wonder or “wow” about it or I’ll begin to get bored by the whole thing. This is why Exit through the Gift shop was so good because it sucked you in with the intriguing character at the center of the whole film. Man on Wire does exactly the same! The synopsis is simple; it’s … Continue reading Man on Wire (2008) Review

The Incredible Hulk (2008) Re-View

I’m now going to be a complete hypocrite because in my Green Hornet review I said that Marvel had ruined all superhero films. This isn’t actually true. They have watered down the whole genre meaning that you almost have to do something completely different with every single superhero film to stop yourself from making something generic and average. I thought Thor and Captain America were average. They portrayed their superhero’s brilliantly but I’d already seen that kind of superhero film with Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk. That meant that when I re-watched the Incredible Hulk, I thought it would fall into the average … Continue reading The Incredible Hulk (2008) Re-View

Splice (2009) Review

The good thing about LoveFilm is I can keep it completely random. I don’t put any of my films as high priority, I just let them send me whatever film they want. That way I get to see films I’m kind of interested in rather than only seeing films I’m desperate to see all the time. It means I might find a hidden gem. This was the reason that I ended up watching Splice. Now Splice isn’t a hidden gem. It isn’t awful and is actually a very interesting concept. In a time when people are messing with genetics and … Continue reading Splice (2009) Review

The Big Lebowski (1998) Review

I would probably have enjoyed this film more if it wasn’t considered a “classic.” I’ve got a real problem with films considered classics because nine times out of ten, I don’t get it. Last year I watched Easy Rider. This is in a lot of top 50, sometimes top 10, greatest films lists but I watched it utterly bored and confused. This probably means I’m not intelligent enough to get Easy Rider and its subtle comments on “drug taking, corporate America, riding a bike no-handed and not getting a hair cut” but sometimes it feels like people call a film … Continue reading The Big Lebowski (1998) Review
