The X-Files (Season 2) TV Review

Because I review a whole tv series rather than individual episodes, there is a chance of spoilers, so if you haven’t watched the whole series yet, stop reading now! A second season defines a tv show. If a show has got a second season, it usually means it was successful enough to warrant being given at least another six episodes. It then has added pressure. It has to deliver the same quality as the first season, while still moving the characters and show forward so that you aren’t watching the same show again, for another 20 or so episodes. This … Continue reading The X-Files (Season 2) TV Review

Game of Thrones (Season 1) TV Review

Because I review a whole tv series rather than individual episodes, there is a chance of spoilers, so if you haven’t watched the whole series yet, stop reading now! I’m a history geek. Although I’m interested in all sorts of history, medieval is something I find particularly interesting. The wars, the plagues, the scandals and the different royal families, all vying and double-crossing each other. Its one of those times in history that seems like fiction but is brilliantly true. It’s no surprise then that tv has tried to emulate some of that interest and drama. There have been a couple … Continue reading Game of Thrones (Season 1) TV Review

Anger Management (Season 1) TV Review

I never really understood the popularity of either Charlie Sheen or Two and a Half Men. I’ve reviewed enough sitcom’s on here for people to work out what kind of humour I like, usually something very observational or based around the very mundane or ordinary. Two and a Half Men never really hit the hilarious chord. It was decent enough. My Dad has a great way of describing some tv shows; “Chewing Gum for the Eyes.” Two and Half Men fit this perfectly. It wasn’t the best sitcom on television by a long stretch but I know if I tuned … Continue reading Anger Management (Season 1) TV Review

Hebburn (Season 1) TV Review

Because I review a whole tv series rather than individual episodes, there is a chance of spoilers, so if you haven’t watched the whole series yet, stop reading now! Hebburn is an example of a new sitcom taking advantage of two classic sitcom clichés. For starters, it is a sitcom set around a family. I’ve spoken before about how many sitcoms use this and why. Some are very successful but most fall at the wayside, usually because they don’t offer anything new. Hebburn is slightly different though. The family is at the center of the sitcom but it’s also got a very … Continue reading Hebburn (Season 1) TV Review

Trollied (Season 2) TV Review

Because I review a whole tv series rather than individual episodes, there is a chance of spoilers, so if you haven’t watched the whole series yet, stop reading now! A second season will often make or break a television show. It’s not got the “new shine” anymore. It’s not got the pressure of introducing new characters or the safety net of no-expectations. Instead, the series has to develop the characters and try to move the series forward slightly. This is harder with sitcoms because the status-quo can’t change too much. The situation and characters can’t develop too far or you lose the essence … Continue reading Trollied (Season 2) TV Review

Red Dwarf X TV Review

Because I review a whole tv series rather than individual episodes, there is a chance of spoilers, so if you haven’t watched the whole series yet, stop reading now! Red Dwarf X had “mistake” written all over it! Any comedy show struggles to recapture what made it so good when it comes back after a long hiatus. Only Fools and Horses and The Royle Family are two examples that come to mind immediately and usually their resurrection for “one last special” actually tarnishes the decent reputation a show had. It’s also the case with sitcoms that they usually out-live their best years rather … Continue reading Red Dwarf X TV Review

The Thick of It (Season 1 – 3 and Specials) TV Review

Because I review a whole tv series rather than individual episodes, there is a chance of spoilers, so if you haven’t watched the whole series yet, stop reading now! It took me no time at all to get through three seasons and two hour long specials of The Thick of It. Not just because its only 6 episodes to a season, but because the show is brilliant aand compulsive telly. Its not exactly the most mainstream of show or topic for a comedy. Shining a light on what happens behind the scenes in the British political system, albeit in a … Continue reading The Thick of It (Season 1 – 3 and Specials) TV Review

The X-Files (Season 1) TV Review

Because I review a whole tv series rather than individual episodes, there is a chance of spoilers, so if you haven’t watched the whole series yet, stop reading now! If The X-Files had made its tv debut in 2012, I genuinely believe it would have been cancelled after season 1. It’s not that season 1 is particularly bad, it just doesn’t really feel like The X-Files that I was obsessed with as a kid. I remember it being a show about monsters, aliens, conspiracies and shady, cigarette smoking men. It does have elements of that but only hints of it. … Continue reading The X-Files (Season 1) TV Review
