Views from the Sofa Awards 2019

Views from the Sofa is 7 Years Old today! As has become tradition, we always use our birthday to look back at the past year and give some awards based on the movies we have viewed and reviewed within that year.

These awards are for all the movies watched, not just those released in 2018 (although this has it’s own category too) so uniquely, movies from different eras can go up against each other. That means that this year Silence of the Lambs can face-off against the Aquaman, both Halloween and it’s updated sequel can be in contention and with one theme month this year being The Greatest Movies we have some heavy-hitters fighting it out.

So without further ado, a look at the best (and worst) of what was viewed in 2018!

Best Actor 2018

Nominees: Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour), Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri), Kevin Spacey (American Beauty), Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs

Winner: Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs)

This year I watched some of the Greatest Movies as voted by Empire Magazine’s Readers. This means I was comparing (unfairly?) Rockwell’s great turn in Three Billboards with the powerhouse performance of Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs. Nobody comes close this year for a terrifying and game-changing performance.

Best Actress 2018

Nominees: Jennifer Lawrence (mother!),  Allison Janney (I, Tonya), Bria Vinaite (The Florida Project), Frances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri), Lady Gaga (A Star is Born)

Winner: Frances McDormand

McDormand won the Oscar for her part in Three Billboards and rightly so. She is darkly funny, carries the drama well and elevates the movie with her stark performance.

Best Director 2018

Nominees; Darren Aronofsky (mother!), Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk), Steven Spielberg (Ready Player One), Anthony Russo and Joe Russo (Avengers: Infinity War), Peter Jackson (They Shall Not Grow Old)

Winner: Steven Spielberg

This was so close but what Spielberg managed to achieve by bringing the virtual reality to life while also juggling pop culture references into an amazing movie is incredible. After all these years Spielberg is still the master.

Best Documentary watched and reviewed in 2018

Nominees; Capturing the Friedmans, The Thin Blue Line, Oasis: Supersonic, They Shall Not Grow Old, Bowling for Columbine,

Winner: They Shall Not Grow Old

This movie blew me away. The power of the footage and the interviews, coupled with the new colourising techniques it used, brought the First World War to life in ways that it hadn’t ever before. A worthy inaugural winner.

Best Animated film Viewed and Reviewed in 2018

Nominees; Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3, The Incredibles, The Lion King, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Winner: The Lion King

In the year I viewed all the Pixar movies it is no surprise they dominated the nominees but it is the outright classic Disney movie that takes the crown. Spider-Man was close though and would have beat out the best of Pixar had Lion King not been a contender this year.

Best Film Released in 2018

Nominees: Avengers: Infinity War, Ready Player One, They Shall Not Grow Old, Halloween, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Winner: Avengers: Infinity War

Maybe it is just the huge comic book geek in me. Maybe it is because it has been almost twenty years of build or maybe it is just because this film was incredible! Regardless, Infinity War brought together all the key players that we wanted to see against a worthy villain and then left it on one of the best cliffhangers in cinema. Roll on Endgame!

Best Film Viewed and Reviewed in 2018

Nominees: The Lion King, Train to Busan, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Avengers: Infinity War, They Shall Not Grow Old

Winner: Avengers: Infinity War

I improved upon last year by watching 118 movies in total. The Greatest Movies month (which may be a feature for a few years yet) blew a lot of movies out of the water but Infinity War has catapulted itself to my second favourite film of all time (behind The Dark Knight). However, They Shall Not Grow Old and Train to Busan were close as I saw them for the first time this year!

Worst Film Viewed and Reviewed in 2018

Nominees: The Holiday, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Suspiria, Night of the Living Dead, The Scorpion King, Super Mario Bros.

Winner: Super Mario Bros

In a year when I saw some amazing movies, I had to punish myself by doing a Video-Game movies month. It is no surprise then that Super Mario Bros won out hands-down as the worst film of the year. Lets hope the CGI attempt to bring the characters to the big-screen can right the wrongs of that movie.

Overall, a great year for my movie viewing. The most I’ve seen in a while but the quality remained high. Infinity War dominated, as did They Shall Not Grow Old, two films that made a huge impact on me this year. Lets hope Endgame can conclude the Infinity War story suitably.

A lot to live up to this year!
