Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013) Review

Insidious: Chapter 2 Movie Poster

There was a lot to like about the first Insidious movie. Rather than be the standard haunted house, jump-scare filled horror movie, it tried to do something else, introducing the interesting concept of “The Further.” It meant that I was quite excited for the second movie and the potential it had. The first film ended on a very good cliffhanger, if it felt somewhat bolted-on, and with “The Further” as a central story concept, there was a lot to look forward to. Unfortunately, the movie failed to ever truly live up to the great potential it demonstrated.

It begins much like the first movie, with jump-scares that are very effective and in places quite chilling. The audience has the advantage of knowing what is going on and why, so we wait for the rest of the cast to catch-up somewhat.

“The Further” is used quite well again…

The element I liked the best about the first was how well “The Further” was used. It plays its part in this movie too and the central story, linked to elements from the first film, has some interesting aspects. There are some clever moments that link directly to scenes in the first film, moments that become quite clear and tie things together nicely.

Unfortunately, for all the clever elements, Insidious’ second chapter hardly offers anything new or exciting. “The Further” is used well but not in any way we haven’t really seen in the first. The jump-scares are good but nothing more than just a bang, scream or creepy figure in the distance. Even the ending, which was full of tension and genuine dilemma in the first movie, feels rushed and poorly executed in this one.

There are elements from the first movie that are developed very well

That isn’t to say there isn’t still potential for the Insidious series and I really like the concept of “The Further” but it needs to bring something really new and fresh each time it delivers a sequel. With so many movies of the same ilk, in some cases from the same producers, it could soon become lost amongst the crowd.

Overall, Insidious Chapter 2 delivers the same style of film that the first in the series did. Unfortunately, this is also it’s biggest flaw, as it doesn’t seem to offer anything new or fresh from the first installment. “The Further” is used well and ties to the first movie with some clever story elements but it never rises above average in the story or scares.

Rating – 2.5

(1 – Awful, 2 – Average, 3 – Good, 4 – Great, 5! – Must See)

Unfortunately, the movie doesn’t offer enough that is new!
