Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989) Review

They don’t make movies like Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure anymore. There isn’t a huge bad guy, it’s science-fiction without being too complicated or serious and considering it deals with the future, time travel and such, it’s a very light-hearted, good-natured and easy film to watch – and enjoy.

The first positive is the two main characters themselves. A product of the eighties, they are a couple of stoner, surfer “dudes” without the surfing or any actual reference to drugs. They are stupid but good-natured and played very well by Keanu Reeves as Ted and Alex Winter as Bill. It’s a testament to the two that hearing the now famous “excellent,” “dude” and “bogus” never becomes irritating but on the other hand is much more endearing and funny.

The best of the movie comes from the two central performances

The rest of the comedy comes from how the pair handle the time travel and the collecting of the different historical figures they need. From Billy the Kid to Abraham Lincoln, there is a vast collection of different characters who are all used very well and are acted brilliantly.

The stand-out is definitely Terry Camilleri as Napoleon. He gets left in the present time for the longest and from a water slide to a shopping mall, gets some of the best interactions and funniest moments of the movie. That isn’t to say that the others don’t add their charm, from princesses in England, Beethoven playing five keyboards and Genghis Kahn running riot in a sports store.

The interactions between the different historical figures are some of the best parts of the movie

The idea for the story is unique and very well delivered, which is why it is a classic, spawning at least one sequel, a cartoon series and constant talks of a third movie starring the original cast.

The highlight becomes the great ending, the culmination of the whole movie that showcases the talents of each actor and the characters they are playing. It also demonstrates what makes Bill and Ted such a great movie, it doesn’t take itself too seriously, it isn’t trying to be too clever and its completely non-threatening or offensive. It’s just good, old-fashioned movie fun.

Overall, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure is a movie classic, demonstrating that time-travel, science-fiction and Keanu Reeves can all be delivered in a funny, light-hearted and inoffensive way. The movie has a great cast, demonstrating each historical character is a good style. No wonder people are looking to make a third.

Rating – 3.5

(1 – Awful, 2 – Average, 3 – Good, 4 – Great, 5! – Must See)

I’d definitely watch a third movie!
