Red Notice (2021) Review

Red Notice (2021) - IMDb

In a perfect chicken and egg dilemma, you wonder whether the casting of Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot came before the script or whether they managed to find the perfect three leads for the roles they play. In reality, it is probably a little bit of both because the biggest strength of Red Notice is the cast, their chemistry and how well they suit the roles they play.

Red Notice plays to the strengths of its cast. Johnson can deliver a cool line and a solid punch as well as anyone and he stretches his action-hero legs ably here. Ryan Reynolds is the movie-stealer once again, all together charming, witty and gets the funniest lines with the perfectly timed delivery. Gal Gadot has already shown how ably she can handle the action alongside the men but as the movie’s villain, she also manages to be a credible threat to our mismatched heroes.

Netflix movie review: Red Notice – Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot in glossy but forgettable art heist movie | South China Morning Post

That the next strength of Red Notice, is that it has a old-school feel. Action-focused mismatched buddy comedy was all the rage in the 90s, from Lethal Weapon, Die Hard with a Vengeance and Bad Boys onwards. Here it is revived well, with Johnson playing the straight-laced FBI agent trying to clear his name and Reynolds playing the art thief that holds the keys to help him. They bicker, fight, get placed in crazy situations and slowly come to find mutual respect. It has been done before but with the chemistry between them being this good, it is very entertaining to watch.

As is the all important action. There are plenty of fantastic set-pieces, from the opening chase through an art gallery and an impressive stunt filled scaffolding sequence, to a prison break and a car chase through an abandoned mine. There is lots that will keep the adrenaline running and all three of the leads can handle action with little issue and sell the stakes, even though they constantly border on the ridiculous, very well.

Red Notice' teaser: High-flying adventure with a terrific trio - The Hindu

If you’ve come to Red Notice for the plot, you will be found wanting. This isn’t a movie with a very clever story but it doesn’t feel like it needs to be. It serves its overall purpose very well, its entertaining. There are a few twists and turns along the way and one that will surprise many of the audience, but when you analyse any of the big plot points too closely, the holes are gaping.

Overall, Red Notice is an entertaining action movie which makes good use of its leading stars. Johnson does action well, Reynolds is funny and Gadot is a perfect foil for them both. The chemistry is great and is matched by the old-school action movie feel. The story lacks any clever punches but the film will still keep your interest throughout.
